A Decade

Falling snow looks like faerie dust! Photo: Bruce Harvey
I can remember being more than a bit nervous about 'being out there publicly' on the internet and literally held my breath when I hit the publish button on my very first post.   I thought I would just blend into the crowd and no one would notice my efforts.   So imagine my surprise when I got my first comment!    That was January 8th, 2008.

So ten years ago today!   I had no idea that I would be still doing this after ten whole years.   Some of you are still following me after all this time too and for that, I thank you!

Blog popularity goes up and down like a roller coaster and then new social media moves the crowd along onto something more exciting like venues such as You Tube, Instagram and others.  Everyone wants to try the next big new thing.   Many of them require a smart phone and apps.  I actually don't have a smart phone right now so many of these new social platforms have yet to see me like Instagram and I have even dropped Twitter. I'm saving a lot of money not having one and that's something I can use to buy more yarn! (oh, yea... and pay other bills)

I like the steady familiarity of Blogger. Its a comfortable fit for me.  This is where I sit and write to you.

Every year I like to hold a blogiversary give-away and this year will be no different!  I have some yarn for a lucky commenter!   Its 2- 100 gram skeins of  Dye Cauldron's "Moon Magic Lace Yarn" in the colour way of Cherry Blossom.

(75% super wash merino, 20% silk, 5 % stellina - 875 yards / 800 meters per 100 grams)  Its a lovely pastel pink with hints of peach and a touch of sparkle. It would make pretty warp for some snuggly, all girl scarves!

Knitting: 1.5-2.25 mm needles
Weavers:  15, 18, 24   (+/-)

So don't just sit there.... write me a comment, and then you are entered to win.  Only one entry per person, and leave me some way of getting a ahold of you or the prize will go to the next name drawn.  Also know that comment moderation is enabled to keep spammers away so your comment will appear after I click okay on it.

I hope you are warm and cosy where ever you are as the cold start of 2018 gets under way (or not too hot if you are from down under).  Any season is weaving weather really.

So once again thank you for reading my blog. The winner will be announced January 18th*, 2018.  * I've had to extend the date as I unfortunately have a funeral to attend.  :(

So what's on the horizon, way off in the sunshine?

The snowy Coastal mountain range which are on the mainland and the almost full moon (for the start of the year)!  That's the end of Quadra Island on the left.  If you look closely after the tip of Quadra, you'll see the end of Cortez Island.   Clear and cold at - 4 degrees.  My thanks to Bruce for the great outdoor pictures.

  4. So glad you've kept blogging. I love reading the stories behind a magnificent piece of weaving as all of yours are. Your work challenges me to try harder. I follow a few people on Instagram but find it too instant. By the time I've seen 6 pics I couldn't tell you what the first was. Give us a good story any day.

  5. Been 11 years for me.....wow, who knew??
It's a good platform for me too......I'm on FB, but that's it, none of the other social medias move me.
    Here's to 2018.

  7. Thank you, Susan, for blogging. It is a comfortable fit for us to enjoy your writing. I, too, do not use Instagram, and only use my smartphone for phoning. Your weaving is always inspiring.

  8. It’s fun and inspiring to read your blog! Like a letter from a friend! So, hello from Michigan and congrats on 10 years.

  9. Congratulations on your 10 year blogiversary! I am always inspired by your weaving. I'm more of a knitter, but I have a little Cricket rigid heddle loom and I love to weave simple scarves with my handspun yarns.

I don't have an IPhone either---too complicated and too expensive for my simple life!

    My Ravelry id is brenda0312

  10. Happy Anniversary! But it can't be 10 years! Well, maybe, because I have articles bookmarked from early 2011 on my 'new' computer and have read all the the way to the beginning for sure. You were the first weaving blogger I ever followed and are pretty much the only one I do these days because it is indeed like getting a letter from a friend. May you, Bruce, Callie, and the family live long and well!

  11. Happy Anniversary! I am a new fan of your blog, and clearly have a lot to catch up on. I have recently resumed weaving after a multi-year hiatus, and recently lucked in to a 10H 12T Macomber that I love. Lots of interesting info in your links, thanks!

  13. .. and from friend Linda Carta (who is comment challenged) ... a cut and paste of her comments:

Holy Cow, Susan! How can that be 10 years already? I'm sure I wasn't aware when you started the blog; but I know it has been a lot of years that I've been following (and returning many times over for information that you've so generously shared) your blog. The pink yarn 'win' pales in comparison to the hours of enjoyment, learning, and developing such a nice friendship with you and Bruce that has happened over the years from this effort. I've always felt it to be a very generous spirit that has you sharing and teaching so much of what you do. Most people don't realize just how much work goes into the planning and organizing and editing of the posts. I've also always felt that there are so many weavers who have benefitted from your posts that you probably will never even know about. Congratulations and, more importantly, thank you!!

  15. Happy Anniversary Susan!
I think it was in 2010 when I first discovered your blog. I was new to weaving. Didn't even own a loom but it was something I've been interested in since I was a teenager. I was nearing retirement and thought it was time to start working on my bucket list! I had taken my first class - "Introduction to the Floor Loom" at our local guild. I think it was your large loom with the special tie-up system that came up in my search and led me to your site. I remember spending many hours... into the wee morning! reading your informative and inspiring words. I can honestly say your blog is the only one that I'm still regularly reading after all these years. I would enjoy using that fine pink yarn to make a pair of beautiful socks for my 89 year old mother. She would love them and the fineness of the yarn and fiber would make them very luxurious. Thank you so very much for inspiring me to venture down this rabbit hole of intrigue, creativity and joy. I have found my new passion! Cheers! Steve P

  20. I love your blog and aspire to creating cloth of the quality that you weave. I once posted a picture of a baby blanket I wove on the Strickler in Color group and you were one of the first people to “like” it. That was the biggest compliment to me. I’m looking forward to seeing what you create over the next 10 years. I’m definitely a fan.

  21. Thank you for your informative and inspirational blogs. I have reached further than I thought possible in color and weaving upon seeing the beauty that you have produced and shared on your blog. Both your color play and fine pattern play have given me ideas to individualize a style of my own and I appreciate so much your sharing and photographs, as well. I keep your blog in my favorites and look forward to every new one you put up. Thanks and congratulations on ten fantastic years!

Anita Haimowitz I admire your “sticktoitiveness” as my mother would have said. Being active in social media takes some guts-there’s no lack of critics out there! I’m a fairly new weaver and so pretty new to your posts. I’ve enjoyed them. Hope you carry on!

  30. Gorgeous Yarn!! Would love to win it.
I love your weaving - love to see what you are doing. I love to weave but with running our business, grandchildren and aging parents (89 & 92!) don't get much done. Sigh...maybe someday (LOL) (HMMM that is a lot of "loves"...)

  33. My initial comment never posted as far as I can tell so here it is again.
Your blog is so inspiring! I bought a new 12 shaft Louet Spring after weaving on a 4 shaft loom for many years, and I’m looking at using more complex patterns and finer yarns. I love that you share your thought process as you design, then weave. I’m working back though your posts and finding so many gems.
